An introduction to PinchukArtCentre

PinchukArtCentre serves as a dynamic institution for contemporary art in Ukraine, offering a platform for emerging artists and fostering international collaborations. A dialogue with Olha Shyshlova, Head of Programs at PinchukArtCentre, unfolds the narrative.

PinchukArtCentre engages audiences of all ages in different ways with art and critical thinking and provokes a systematic dialog between the audience, the work of art and the institution. Above all, it contributes to a global dialogue reinforcing the power of cultural diplomacy.

Recently, the institution enhanced its exhibitions with our Podcatcher. PinchukArtCentre hosts two major exhibitions: "Flying Trajectories" and "Inside Out."

"Flying Trajectories" is a personal exhibition of renowned Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrova. With new works exploring questions about Ukraine's past and its impact on the current situation, Kadyrova's exhibition provokes thought and conversation.

"Inside Out," led by French artist JR, is a participatory project that invites anyone in Kyiv to make a photo, tell a story, and announce "We are here." It is a public art demonstration expressing the resilience and continuity of Ukrainian life amidst challenging circumstances.

Engagement with visitors

Challenge

Drawing the exhibition's storytelling isn't just about displaying the artwork. The museum wanted to ensure that the stories were told in several ways to accommodate their diverse audience. It was essential that visitors had the option to read, listen, or engage in guided tours.

The Podcatcher wasn't the first audio guide they tried. QR codes-audio tour, wall texts, and their platforms all had limitations. Information was too dense, and the process tedious. People wanted simplicity, intuitiveness, and accessibility - they didn't want technology to be a hurdle in their experience with art.

"People who don't like to read a lot, they can listen… we always want to give as much information as possible," noted Shyshlova.

Here is where the Podcatcher audio guide came into play. The museum utilized it to provide an accessible way for visitors to learn about the art exhibitions. The institution decided to use the artists' voices, bringing a unique and valued perspective to the storytelling.

It is all about location; how do you intrigue visitors to tour with the Podcatcher?

Like placing a sculpture in a gallery, they refined their strategy for the Podcatcher placement. The entrance, the first choice, proved non-obvious. Soon enough, it dawned that the perfect spot isn't necessarily the most obvious. A relocation, with the help of signage, revealed a satisfying surge in engagement for visitors. The right place made a difference.

Solution

Once implemented, the Podcatcher enhanced the storytelling and overall user experience. Each guided tour became a personalized journey, an intimate conversation between the listener and the artist. The Podcatcher didn't just replace QR codes. It transformed how we tell the stories behind each masterpiece.

The use of audio guides played an integral role in fulfilling PinchukArtCentre's storytelling objectives. Having the option to listen to the artists themselves provided an added layer of depth to understanding the art. It helped foster a greater connection between the visitor and the work.

With the Podcatcher enhancing its storytelling technique, PinchukArtCentre has successfully made contemporary art more accessible to all visitors.
